Minnie "Maud" Powell was born on August 22, 1867, in Peru, Illinois. She began her musical education in Aurora, Illinois, where she took violin and piano lessons at age seven. Powell gained international recognition for her violin skills and debuted with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1885. She was the first American violinist to achieve international rank and was known for her advocacy of music by American, women, and black composers. She made significant contributions to the classical music repertoire, including the first American performances of Tchaikovsky and Sibelius violin concertos.
