Judson University issued the following announcement on Aug. 11
Judson University’s Department of Communication Arts is pleased to announce the creation of a new academic minor in Sports Broadcasting/Sports Information beginning this fall.
“We are excited to offer this broadly based and practical minor. Judson students will have great hands-on opportunities to hone their skills in a number of areas that will set them up well for our increasingly digital world,” said Dr. Warren Anderson, Interim Chair of Communication Arts and Director of the DCWPA. Students who will add this minor to their academic work at Judson will use the Dark Rooms Studios offered through the DCWPA.
Students will take classes across a wide range of disciplines, including media writing, audio-visual recording, and sports sociology. The minor consists of 21-hours or seven classes and was created to increase the career readiness for students studying Communications, Exercise Sports Marketing, Business Management and Business Marketing. A key component of the minor will be significant internship opportunities, especially in conjunction with the Judson Athletic Department.
“We are thrilled this program will not only allow our athletes to have an opportunity to gain valuable experience in broadcasting but also augment the coverage of our teams via increased broadcasts and live streams done by our very own students,” noted Austin Anderson, director of Athletic Communication. He notes that partnerships are also being discussed with local high schools. Also, Judson is pursuing opportunities to partner with local professional and semi-professional athletic teams in Chicago and the surrounding areas.
