Senator Don DeWitte recently expressed gratitude to students and speakers who participated in the Spring Youth Advisory Council. The event provided students with a hands-on experience in state government, public service, and the legislative process. DeWitte noted, “The YAC is always one of my favorite events of the year because I truly enjoy watching the students get excited about their futures and learning how their voice can affect real change."
The Senator also announced a lineup of upcoming events in the 33rd District. These public events range from a pet adoption fair in St. Charles on May 10 to a Senior Fair in Crystal Lake on October 14. More events are planned, and updates are available on the Senator’s website.
In legislative news, the Illinois House of Representatives passed House Bill 1237 on April 10, proposing a ban on Native-themed mascots and logos in schools. If enacted, schools would need to rebrand by July 1, 2026, unless approved by a federally recognized tribe. This move has sparked concern over the financial burden on schools and the impact on community identity.
Further, Senate Democrats advanced Senate Bill 42, which aims to alter current requirements around cannabis storage and law enforcement procedures related to the smell of cannabis. Senator DeWitte criticized the measure, stating, “This proposal handcuffs law enforcement and undermines their ability to identify impaired drivers.”
On a different legislative front, Senate Bill 1288, designed to improve food safety for individuals with celiac disease, passed the Illinois Senate unanimously. This bill mandates training for food handlers on handling gluten-free foods and increases allergen awareness. The legislation now moves to the Illinois House for further review.
