Aris Garcia, the Republican candidate for State Representative in Illinois’ 49th district, is slamming U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) for voting against condemning Hamas.

Garcia pointed out Ramirez demonstrated a lack of deep knowledge of history.

“As a first-generation immigrant raised in Germany with a deep awareness of the Holocaust’s horrors, it’s heartbreaking to witness people like Rep. Delia Ramirez (D) display either a shocking ignorance of history or hidden antisemitic sentiments,” Garcia said on Facebook. “Her vote against condemning Hamas is a disgrace. We must remember and learn from history.”

Ramirez represents Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District and was one of just 10 House members who voted against a resolution condemning Hamas attacks on Israel. The resolution affirmed American support for Israel and condemned Hamas passed with bipartisan support by a vote of 412-10, six members voted present. The other naysayers included six of the eight “Squad” members: Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, Summer Lee, and Cori Bush; along with Reps André Carson, Al Green, and Thomas Massie.

The remaining two “Squad” members, Reps. Greg Casar and Ayanna Pressley, voted present.

Ramirez issued a statement condemning Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel but had previously supported an alternate resolution advocating an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“I couldn’t vote for today’s resolution. It was incomplete, and I was offered no opportunity to submit changes," stated Ramirez in response to criticism over her stance." When considering legislation," she explained," I ask myself: does this proposal honor our shared humanity? Does it bring us closer to peace through a two-state solution?”

She continued saying the resolution filed on Oct. 11 did not honor shared humanity nor advance a two-state solution.

Garcia is campaigning for the 49th District, which includes parts of Batavia, West Chicago, South Elgin, Wayne, Bartlett, and sections of Aurora and Geneva. This district is currently represented by State Rep. Maura Hirschauer (D-Batavia).
