At its Sept. 12 meeting, the Geneva Community Unity School District heard from Superintendent Dr. Kent Mutchler, who said the district was getting back to normal pre-COVID practices.

"We've had wonderful open houses at our buildings and I want to thank our staff for putting the effort into those and our parents for their awesome attendance at those," Mutchler said. "I guess it's another example of getting back to more normal pre-COVID practices. So those have been well attended and I think great, great ultimately for kids.”

The board was told the district was able to complete a couple different maintenance projects. A significant portion of the district concrete was repaved and suffered no defacements. A new roof on the high school was installed at a fraction of the normal cost because it did not have to be a complete replacement.

The board was told Heartland Elementary School celebrated its 20th anniversary in September. The school hosted an event that was open to all current and past students. The school also has a new sensory garden that was put in by Girl Scout Troop 1645 and is being enjoyed by the students.

The Vikings also had a successful Young Vikings Night at their Friday night football game. They had some upcoming players come out on the field, featured the eighth grade band that night, and had plenty of future Vikings baton twirlers and cheerleaders. The board thanked all directors, coaches, and staff for helping put together and hosting the event.
