6. PROJECT IDEAS

Mohini Shanker just came back from a leadership trip in Germany and had some ideas.

• Medicine Helps is a non profit in Germany that provides medical care for those who don’t have access to healthcare. In Aurora, there was an idea to have a health fair every month or so to provide medical care to people who can’t access it, made up of retired medical professionals and volunteers. Mohini is going to look into services like this that are already being provided.

• Adam was wondering if there were any programs that brought the different faiths of Aurora together. Dr. Halloway mentioned that there is an interfaith community liaison team, which is a forum that is been held with different groups to dispel rumors of different faiths. The team also gives info on what the different groups are doing in the community. Now, a team is being developed (4-5 individuals, volunteer basis, meet with other churches). But, this team is not there to expose people people to faiths so that is an idea to help create someday. There is a group that does events such as ‘meet your catholic neighbor’ to create awareness, so this could be expanded on to expose more people to religion.

• Saher and Mrs. Cross chose the final applicants for the youth council, so next month there will be a social and a first meeting where they will meet the current council. There will be another call-out for new members closer to the school year to fill remaining spots.

• Margarita was thinking it could be cool to host/sponsor a job fair for teens, especially bringing in opportunities where teens are specifically being looked for. Internship opportunities as well, and introductions to professions, and resume building. The youth council could assist in mock interviews, resume reading/college app reading.

• Nallely is still interested in having a committee for Sleep Out For America. The organization does it November 16th, but considering the fall conditions Illinois gets, she is interested in starting it earlier. She is going to contact them because she does want to do it in partnership with them, but there is the possibility of creating our own for just Aurora.

-Nallely also thought of creating workshops for creating resumes, sending professional emails, etc. The council could do pre-work before the professionals come and do the editing and essay reading and interviewing etc. like a 9-12 1-3 session. Smaller events could also be held for more 1-1 time and special focuses and then one big day for the main event. This would be held before school is in session and then a few months into the school year.

7. COMMITTEE REPORT

Youth Summit Committee has met, and Adam has sent emails out to all potential teachers and speakers for the event. He sent them this week. Adam is looking for other ways to get the word out for his event. Margarita suggested having teachers select students who they feel would be interested in the event and who would be suited for the event. Another way could be making a small pitch video including clips of some of the chosen speakers talking about the event and why they are taking part in it. Jake suggested reaching out to local churches or libraries and asking them to put out a flyer for the event. Social media will also be used. September 21st, 2019 is when the event will be held at the Prisco Center.

8. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mohini reported on her experience at Ambassador’s in Sneakers. She was given the opportunity to talk to activists, members of parliament, and build a relationship with 12 U.S. and 12 German students.

Adam informed us that his bill for a statewide youth advisory council that was passed in the house was killed in the Senate. He is looking for a senate co-sponsor and will be working on the bill in the fall.

9. ADJOURN

The meeting was adjourned by Jake Kelly, seconded by Safa Zaman at 5:30 P.M. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, August 14th at 4:30 P.M.
