Elgin residents are being encouraged to apply for the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship and award programs, which aim to recognize students, adults, and organizations who embody values such as service, equity, and civic responsibility.

The scholarships are open to both high school students and adults. The annual Humanitarian Award is also available for individuals or organizations whose work aligns with Dr. King's ideals.

According to the City of Elgin, the Youth Scholarship is designed for high school students who have shown significant involvement in human rights, civil rights, social justice, or world peace efforts. "Applicants whose work reflects Dr. King’s ideals are encouraged to apply," the city stated.

The Adult Scholarship was established in 2024 and supports adult learners engaged in similar causes. Awards can be up to $1,000 depending on the number of applicants, quality of submissions, and available funding.

For both youth and adult scholarships, applications must be submitted by December 1.

Additionally, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award will be presented in three categories: Individual Adult, Individual Youth, and Organization. The award recognizes those whose service demonstrates a commitment to building a stronger and more equitable community consistent with Dr. King's teachings.

Nominations for the Humanitarian Award are due by December 20.

Further details about these opportunities can be found on the City of Elgin's website or by contacting the MLK Celebration Committee at mlk@elginil.gov.
