Construction crews will remove 47 parkway trees in November as part of the East State Street reconstruction project in Geneva, according to a recent announcement. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is overseeing the rebuilding of East State Street (Route 38), covering the stretch from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River.
The project, which will span several years, includes widening the roadway, enhancing streetscapes, adding bike lanes, upgrading traffic signals, installing new street lighting, and improving water main and storm drainage infrastructure. IDOT has stated that tree removal is necessary for highway expansion but emphasized plans to reintroduce greenery along the corridor. "When the project is completed, 290 new trees featuring a diverse mix of species will be planted along East State Street," according to the release.
Utility companies have been relocating underground infrastructure over recent months, causing lane closures in both directions on Route 38. The full reconstruction effort is expected to begin in spring 2026 and finish by late 2027. Final punch list items are set for completion in the following year. The timeline may change depending on how quickly utility relocations are finished.
Additional details and updates about the project can be found on the City of Geneva's East State Street Reconstruction web page.
