Elgin has been recognized as one of the best places to live in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. The city ranked No. 5 among cities in Illinois and secured the No. 122 spot nationally on the publication's 2025-2026 list of the "250 Best Places to Live in the U.S."
"I'm proud that Elgin has been named one of the '250 Best Places to Live in the U.S. for 2025–2026' by U.S. News & World Report. This recognition reflects the strength, diversity and resilience of our community," said Elgin Mayor David Kaptain. He highlighted Elgin's rich history, cultural diversity, and commitment to sustainable growth as key factors contributing to a unique and enriching quality of life.
The annual report evaluates cities across the country based on affordability, quality of life, job market strength, and overall desirability. Elgin stood out due to its consistent focus on public safety, community development, and economic opportunity.
"This recognition reflects our focused strategic planning and collaboration across city departments, community partners and residents," stated City Manager Rick Kozal. He emphasized the city's commitment to delivering high-quality services that support a thriving, inclusive community.
In 2024, Elgin was also recognized as the "safest and most affordable city in America" by GoBankingRates.com.
