Aurora pauses special census recount amid federal hiring freeze

The City of Aurora has decided to pause and recalibrate its Special Census recount effort. This decision follows approval from the Federal Census Bureau. Initially scheduled to begin on February 3, 2025, the recount was delayed due to a federal hiring freeze enacted by the new Presidential Administration.

City officials engaged in discussions with the Census Bureau and the City Council throughout May to determine a new timeline for the campaign. Both parties have agreed to pause the recount while planning to revamp it at a future date. The Census Bureau will notify the city when new dates are available and will hold onto funds paid by Aurora until operations resume. The city retains the right to request a refund of unused funds if it chooses to terminate its agreement with the bureau.

Aurora plans not only to re-enter the queue for a full recount but also intends to file an amended map focusing on newly constructed residential units across the city.

The Special Census campaign was initiated after findings from the 2020 Decennial Census indicated that Aurora had lost approximately 17,000 residents. This loss resulted in over $4.3 million per year in tax revenue being forfeited by the city. Unfortunately, this funding cannot be recovered or retroactively provided following any results from a future Special Census.

Despite these challenges, Aurora remains committed to ensuring every resident is accurately counted and represented.
