Former House Speaker Michael Madigan's recent conviction on corruption charges has highlighted ongoing issues within Illinois' political system. Senator Don DeWitte, reflecting on the case, described it as a "dark moment in our state’s history," yet also sees it as an opportunity for change. He urged all 177 legislators to pass comprehensive reforms with independent oversight and tougher ethics laws.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are calling for fiscal responsibility from Governor JB Pritzker ahead of his upcoming budget address. They express concern over the state's estimated $3.2 billion budget deficit, pointing out that spending has increased due to federal COVID funds and one-time revenues. Senator DeWitte expressed worry that tax hikes might be used again to balance the budget.

In other news, Senator DeWitte extended gratitude to participants of the Valentines for Seniors program, which delivered over 3,000 valentines to individuals in nursing homes and assisted living centers throughout Kane and McHenry Counties.

Additionally, Senator DeWitte is collaborating with the Illinois Treasurer’s Office for an ICASH Unclaimed Property event in Carpentersville. The event aims to connect residents with unclaimed property exceeding $5 billion held by the state.
