FOIA Request to City Of Elgin Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024.
In our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at the Kane County Reporter have submitted a request for public records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.
Our request specifically pertains to sales tax records within the city of Elgin from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. We are seeking a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city during this period with specific details including business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax paid.
In addition to this detailed breakdown, we have also requested information on the total amount of sales tax that the city collected during this same timeframe.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to these public records is essential for us in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We will continue our pursuit of transparency and accountability in local government and look forward to sharing these findings with our readers once received.
