City of Batavia City Council met Sept. 16

The Mayor called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Ald. Beck read aloud the Consent Agenda.

Motion by Ald. Beck, seconded by Ald. Leman, to approve the consent agenda. Motion carried 12 yea/ 0 nay/ 2 absent.

8. PRESENTATION: Update On The Wastewater Treatment Plant Rehabilitation Project – Jerry Ruth, Trotter & Associates

Jerry Ruth rose to address the Council. He presented his report on the progress of the Wastewater Treatment Plan Rehabilitation Project. Concrete work is underway at the north end of the facility. The work on the bike path retaining wall is still ongoing. This element of the project is anticipated to be completed in October 2024. The project is approximately 36% complete. 9. PRESENTATION: Batavia Environmental Commission Quarterly Update – Alexandra Zelles

Ald.

Nikki Mattiscyk, Michael Willuweit, and Anna Roberts rose to address the Council and delivered the quarterly report on the activities of the Batavia Environmental Commission. Willuweit recognized the new members of the BEC, thanked the city staff, and introduced Roberts, who is the student liaison from the Batavia High School. Willuweit and Mattiscyk shared a slideshow of educational and outreach initiatives. They shared pictures of the progress of the natural area restoration effort at South Fabyan forest preserve.

Mayor Schielke offered his thanks for the work of the BEC.

10. MAINSTREET MINUTE

Kristen Desler from Batavia MainStreet delivered her report on the recent and upcoming MainStreet activities. Applications for the 2025 Boardwalk shop spaces are open now and a virtual Q&A for virtual vendors is planned. Illuminated Space, a local business, will be recognized as an Illinois Maker on Tuesday the 20th. BEI is celebrating their 65th anniversary with an open house reception on Sept 19th from 4-6 pm. A downtown lantern walk is planned for October 3rd, from 4-7 pm.

11. ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT

Administrator Newman delivered her report on the recent and upcoming initiatives of the City of Batavia. The Plan Commission will be meeting this week to discuss text updates to City Ordinances. Over 1,000 people attended the recent Fire Department Open House.

The Streets Department has completed replacement of street lights on River Street and Batavia Avenue with LED street lighting

13. MAYOR’S REPORT

Mayor Schielke delivered his report. He noted that Ald. Wolff is a Batavia favorite, in part due to his efforts to bring Batavia High School sports broadcasting to a larger audience. This is especially meaningful to residents who are not able to attend games in person.

Wolff additionally thanked the technical staff who provide the video services and noted that this upcoming game on Friday the 20th will be provided through a different broadcast service.

Motion by Ald. Solfa, seconded by Ald. Malay, to enter an Executive Session. Motion carried 13 yea/ 0 nay/ 1 absent.

15. ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Ald. Wolf , seconded by Ald. Malay, to adjourn. Motion carried by voice vote. The meeting adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
