The Illinois Flag Commission has begun accepting public submissions for a new state flag design. The initiative aims to engage the public in the redesign process, allowing residents to contribute their ideas and creativity.
The commission's spokesperson stated, "We are excited to see what the people of Illinois come up with. This is an opportunity for everyone to be part of history."
Submissions will be accepted until November 30, 2024. Participants are encouraged to submit designs that reflect the state's heritage, culture, and values. The commission will review all entries and select finalists, which will then be subject to a public vote.
"We want the new flag to represent all Illinoisans," said another representative from the commission. "It's important that it resonates with people from all walks of life."
The current state flag was adopted in 1915 and features a simplified version of the state seal on a white background. While it has served as a symbol for over a century, there is growing interest in updating it to better reflect contemporary Illinois.
