On June 16, Governor JB Pritzker signed into law the largest government spending plan in Illinois history, totaling over $55 billion. This budget includes nearly $1 billion in new tax increases and relies on budget maneuvers and one-time revenue sources. The Fiscal Year 2026 budget, passed by the Democrat majority on May 31, reflects a significant increase since Pritzker took office. Senate Republicans opposed the plan, citing record spending, misplaced priorities, and a lack of transparency.

The budget introduces new taxes on vacation rentals, gaming, phone services, nicotine products, and additional taxes on businesses. Efforts by Republicans to provide tax relief were blocked this year. The plan continues to fund programs for non-citizens while underfunding services for vulnerable citizens and education.

Illinois Republicans are urging a veto of Senate Bill 328 and have filed a lawsuit in Sangamon County court to enforce the Illinois Constitution’s Three Readings Rule. The lawsuit challenges the passage of Senate Bill 328 without following required procedures. The bill would allow out-of-state businesses to be sued in Illinois courts for incidents with no connection to the state.

Last week, Senator Don DeWitte participated in a panel discussion about public transit's future in Illinois at the City Club of Chicago. He was joined by State Representative Kam Buckner and transit activist Jacky Grimshaw.

Senator DeWitte is also conducting a 2025 Summer Survey seeking constituent input on various topics including budget issues and proposed tax increases.

A free document shredding event is scheduled for June 28 in St. Charles with State Rep. Dan Ugaste. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for donation.

Upcoming events include traveling office hours and senior fairs across different locations throughout July to October.
