Aris Garcia, a candidate for the 49th House District, has publicly expressed his opposition to Elgin Community College’s (ECC) proposed 5% property tax hike and a 2.5% tuition increase.
“To justify this increase the college board is citing increases in enrollment to 9,800 which is still 13% less than enrollment in 2013-14. No reason to increase taxes if total enrollment has decreased in a 10 year period,” Garcia said on Facebook.
The proposal from ECC has not only sparked opposition from Garcia but also from the Kane County GOP. They were successful in halting a similar 5% property tax increase on Nov. 21. However, they are now facing another potential hike. Kane County GOP expressed their resistance clearly on Facebook.
“STOP ANOTHER TAX HIKE IN KANE COUNTY!” Kane County GOP said.
“We stopped a 5% property tax increase on Nov 21, but now face another proposed 5% hike for Elgin Community College (ECC). This affects the majority of Kane County homeowners north of Geneva. Please EMAIL THE BOARD (below) and JOIN THE 12/12 MEETING to say NO to more taxes. Spread the word to neighbors - united, we can win again!”
Furthermore, they urged residents through mailers and social media platforms to communicate with the board and participate in a December 12 meeting. The goal is unity against additional tax burdens that would impact Kane County homeowners.
“Elgin Community College is proposing a 5% property tax hike (the maximum amount allowed under the law) and a 2.5% tuition increase,” a mailer noting the proposed tax increase reads.
It encourages those interested to attend the Dec. 12 Board Meeting at 6:30 p.m. in Building E, Room 125 The Seigle Auditorium and to send an email with the subject “Public Comment” to boardoftrustees@elgin.edu.
Garcia is currently campaigning for a seat in the 49th House District, which is presently represented by State Rep. Maura Hirschauer (D-Batavia). The district covers parts of Batavia, West Chicago, South Elgin, Wayne, Bartlett, and portions of Aurora and Geneva.
