U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Schaumburg) announced the advancement of a bill to rename the St. Charles East Side Station Post Office the “Veterans of the Vietnam War Memorial Post Office," in a July 14 Twitter post.
"Our nation's veterans deserve more recognition for their service to our country," he wrote. "That's why I'm glad my bill to rename the St. Charles Post Office in honor of veterans who served in Vietnam passed the Oversight Committee unanimously yesterday."
According to a July 12 post on Krishnamoorthi's House website, the bill to rename the post office was passed unanimously by the Committee on Oversight and Accountability. Krishnamoorthi proposed the new name on March 29, on National Vietnam War Veterans Day. The bill drew strong support from veteran groups and local leaders across the district, his website said.
"I’m so proud of the contributions of the veterans and their families in my district and across the nation," Krishnamoorthi wrote. "Renaming the post office in St. Charles is a way for our community to recognize and honor the men and women who have served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our great nation.
"I look forward to the official renaming of the post office when we will be able to come together to celebrate and honor their service,” Krishnamoorthi said.
The post office is at 610 East Main St. in Saint Charles. The renaming has been publicly supported by Department of Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Bobby Welch, the Coalition of Veterans Organizations Board of Directors, St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek, and others, the web site said.
According to his House biography, Krishnamoorthi was elected to Congress in 2016 and is now in his fourth term representing Illinois’ 8th District, which includes Chicago’s west and northwest suburbs as well as the 41st ward of the city.
