State Sen. Dan McConchie (R-Lake Zurich) is blasting a bill that would require Illinois public school districts to provide a sexual education curriculum that has been previously rejected as an attack on the rights of parents.

“The idea that you would strip away local control for this is appalling,” McConchie said in a Shaw Local article. “We are seeing one particular agenda being pushed down parents’ throats.”

As amended to its current form, House Bill 5188 seeks to mandate that all public school districts provide instructional content from the National Sex Education Standards while also paving the way for any individual student or their parent to opt out.

The curriculum standards were set in Senate Bill 818, which became law in 2022, putting in place the framework for public schools to adopt sexual education curriculum. With the law allowing Illinois school districts to opt out, many of them jumped at the opportunity.

McConchie cited the 2021 passing of the SAFE-T Act as another example of a lame-duck session bill he said did not get appropriate review.
