Teachers from the Education Pathways program at Batavia High School introduced some of their students to the Batavia Public School District 101 Board of Education at its Oct. 25 meeting.
Austun Savitski, a family & consumer science teacher, and Michael Theriault, a math teacher, came to the meeting to showcase their Education Pathways project. The program was created by the State of Illinois to offer two dual enrollment classes that prepare high school students for careers in education. Batavia is one of five area schools to offer this program.
“It's been awesome seeing the students being able to go in those classes,” Theriault told the board. “Teachers welcome them in, guide them, mentor them, and we're just really blown away by the outpouring of support by administrators, staff, teachers within our district. And we're very excited for this and the future of this and see how we can continue molding our future educators."
Three of the students involved in the program spoke to the board about what they have enjoyed and valued from the program. They listed getting to see different teachers across the district teach, lesson-planning projects, and hearing from guest speakers from all areas of education as some of the best things from the program.
There are currently 47 students at Batavia High School enrolled in the introduction class for the program. Students in the program can get six college credits by the time they complete the two different classes in the program, and gain 45 hours of observation time in classrooms, all of which can go on their college transcript

The board will meet again at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center at 335 West Wilson St.
