House Republican Majority has issued the following press release:

(West Dundee, IL) – Candidate for the 66th District Illinois House of Representatives, Connie Cain, called on her incumbent opponent, State Representative Suzanne Ness, to explain her support for numerous tax hikes that have hurt families already dealing with record inflation.

“Taxpayers simply cannot afford the high-tax policies supported and pushed by State Representative Suzanne Ness,” said Cain.

Last year, Ness rolled out the red carpet for new costs on consumers and employers in the way of a new tax mandating recycling of used carpeting when businesses renovate. With record inflation and supply chain interruptions, clearly, the burden of any new taxes and fees is passed onto consumers who already cite high taxes as a top reason for leaving Illinois. Aiming to keep up with the new taxation idea first championed in California, their state’s version of the “Carpet Tax” resulted in contractors assessing an additional $0.35 per square yard cost for customers, adding an additional $23 million tax burden on Californians in 2021 alone (according to the California Carpet Stewardship Program’s 2021 annual report).

Ness supported an eye-popping $665 million tax hike on businesses across the state. At a time when job-creators were already experiencing unprecedented revenue reductions resulting from the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and business shutdowns, Ness further hindered the ability of small businesses to remain viable by drowning them in more taxes.

“Over the past year, we have seen businesses, large and small, flee Illinois for a lower tax, more business-friendly state,” Cain said. Their departures should come as no surprise when we study the policies Suzanne Ness and Illinois Democrats have passed which punish businesses as they emerged from the pandemic to skyrocketing inflation and workforce shortages. Families don’t need any new tax hikes from Springfield, but rather need relief from Democrats’ harmful tax-and-spend policies.”
