Justice is Needed for Redistricting our Supreme Courts and Districts
This year, Illinois’ judicial and legislative maps were up for redistricting and the
process showed that fairness and accurate data were not included in redrawing the
districts’ boundaries. Near the end of session, the maps were redesigned with
preference of one political party to retain their majority across all districts. If you
think this is unfair, it is. Governor Pritzker signed the maps into law on June 4 with
claims it reflects our state’s diversity, but that is not truly accurate.
The General Assembly and Governor used outdated data to make decisions with
constitutional, demographic and political consequences for decades to come.
Redistricting should not be turned into a game of who is the super majority, but
rather, to ensure our courts have fair and even representation across the state.
