Following a week that saw the Illinois House pass resolutions renaming streets and honoring residents, state Rep. Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) called out his colleagues to start discussing substantial legislative proposals.
He strongly suggested having conversations and immediate actions on pieces of legislation tackling timely and important concerns.
"This week you saw us pass nothing but resolutions. We passed no consequential issues this past week,” Keicher said. “For months during COVID, we were talking regularly about the need to come to Springfield to do business. And now that we're here, what do we do? No business.”
Contributing to Keicher's frustrations was the May 7 House session that was adjourned in less than ten minutes.
"For less than 10 minutes today you saw us pass nothing," added the Sycamore Republican lawmaker. "We've not only wasted the people's time. We have wasted effort on trying to come up with things to do that are falling on deaf ears."
He also called out Gov. Pritzker for walking back his campaign promise for a bipartisan solution to improve the economy of Illinois.
"We have failed to have meaningful conversations about what we can do to help spur that continued economic growth in the state of Illinois," Keicher argued. "We have seen him walk back on his promises that will provide the needed platform to allow Illinois to continue to succeed."
As lawmakers in Springfield tackle the important redistricting process, the GOP is also clamoring for legislation to solve the problems hounding the state such as property tax, ethics reform, and the COVID-19 outbreak at LaSalle Veterans' Home.
Keicher emphasized that "It's time to have a real conversation” on what the state can do to grow jobs and places of work and push “Illinois’ economy to become the behemoth that it's destined to be.”
