City of Batavia issued the following announcement on April 3.
Many household products including baby wipes, adult personal hygiene products, household cleaning wipes, and other similar towelettes are labeled and marketed as DISPOSABLE and/or FLUSHABLE. While these products may be marketed as a convenience item in this way, the truth is that these types of items have the ability to clog and stop up not only the sewer line on your property, but also can cause blockages and service problems in the City of Batavia public sewer system and lift pump stations.
Unlike toilet paper, these products DO NOT break down once they are flushed. They can cause blockages in your private sewer line, especially older pipelines that may have greases, roots, or other obstructions already existing. A repair of the private sewer line can leave you, the homeowner or business owner with a very costly sewer rodding or even emergency excavation.
On a larger scale, when these products make their way into the City’s public sewer system, they collect together, causing very large obstructions and clogs in the main collector lines and get tangled in pump stations requiring extremely expensive repairs or replacement of critical equipment.
What We Can All Do to Help:
The following items should NEVER be flushed into the sewer system:
- Disinfecting/surface wipes
- Mop or “Swiffer” type refills
- Baby wipes
- Paper towels
- Jewelry wipes
- Pet care wipes
- Cosmetic wipes
- First Aid wipes
- Disposable diapers or diaper liners
- Bio-pads (nursing home, home health care, etc.)
- Cotton swabs
- Feminine hygiene products
- Toilet cleaning pads
- ANY Moist type towelettes
Most homes and businesses have a sewer connection to the City’s public sewer system. This connection runs from the home or business to the sewer main where it is connected to the City’s public sewer system. The sewer line from your home or business to the property line is the responsibility of the home or business owner to keep clear. Save yourself costly repairs and heavy clean-up while helping your City Sewer System run at peak capacity. Please do not flush the listed items; place them in the trash, not the toilet.
