Former state university employee Vander Velde paid in $6K to pension fund, could collect $88K in retirement

Former state university employee Melle Vander Velde, who retired in January 2018, saved $6,011 toward a pension over 5 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Vander Velde would collect as much as $87,873, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Kane County Reporter.

The projection assumes Vander Velde received $1,847 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 4 years of retirement, Vander Velde will have already received $7,726 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
