Former state university employee Murphy paid in $14K to pension fund, could collect $220K in retirement

Former state university employee Jean Murphy, who retired in July 2017, saved $13,837 toward a pension over 17 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Murphy would collect as much as $220,209, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Kane County Reporter.

The projection assumes Murphy received $4,628 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 3 years of retirement, Murphy will have already received $14,305 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
