City of Batavia issued the following announcement on Oct. 3.
Effective January 1, 2019 Batavia will have an ISO Classification Rating of 1. The Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) provides a leading source of information about risk for the property & casualty insurance industry. The ISO Public Protection Classification (PPC) program classifies and rates the municipal fire protection capabilities of roughly 50,000 communities across the United States. ISO is used by insurance companies in most states to evaluate fire departments for the purpose of establishing insurance premiums in their local area. The fire department, 911 dispatch, and water supply are measured in the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). This schedule reviews these major elements of a community’s fire-suppression capability and develops a numerical grading called a Public Protection Classification (PPC).
In obtaining an ISO Classification, the grading is broken down into three major categories:
The Fire Department: 50%
Water Supply 40%
911 Dispatch 10%
The rating schedule examines several aspects of a fire department such as staffing, response times, training and equipment, and assigns points based on its capabilities. In addition, the rating takes into account any community activities that affect fire prevention, such as fire safety education programs and fire investigation procedures. ISO investigates the 911 dispatch system used by a department, considering its size, facilities and effectiveness. Also evaluated is the

(cont.) water supply system for its capacity and distribution capabilities including infrastructure reliability.
Through the program, ISO collects relevant data about the quality of the community's public fire protection and then assigns it a number between one and ten. Class 1 indicates the area has superior fire protection and Class 10 indicates that the community's fire protection fails to meet the minimum ISO criteria.
ISO evaluates the fire protection services of around 50,000 fire departments across the nation. Only about 305 nationwide, including barely 20 in Illinois, have achieved a Class 1 designation. This places Batavia in the top 1% of all fire departments evaluated in the country
