Elgin Symphony Orchestra issued the following announcement on July 26.
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO) is set to open its exciting 2018-19 season with concerts September 15 & 16 featuring Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Debussy’s famous Clair de Lune, Chopin’s Grand Valse Brillante and Cello Concerto by modern composer Mason Bates, who is also a DJ, curator, and advocate for bringing new music to new spaces. The concerto, an ESO premiere, will be performed by cellist Joshua Roman. Bates wrote the piece specifically for the talented Mr. Roman: “The piece begins plaintively, with Josh floating over a restless orchestra, and the lyricism only expands in the central slow movement. But by the final movement the rhythmic energy wins the day, and at one point Josh even plays with a guitar pick. The Elgin Symphony Orchestra (ESO) has launched an online CrowdRise fundraising campaign at CrowdRise.com/eso-2018, to raise money for the 2018-19 season. Donations can also be made by texting “ESO18” to 41411. To keep the music accessible to all, ESO ticket prices cover only 35% of costs. The rest comes from the generous support of donors.
