Elgin Community College (ECC) is accepting donations for this year’s edition of Project Backpack, which provides backpacks and school supplies to students in need, according to the college’s website.

Those interested in donating supplies should drop them off at collection boxes throughout the Elgin community before July 31. Project Backpack can also be supported via cash/check donations, which should be sent to the ECC Foundation either via mail or the foundation’s website.

The backpacks and supplies will be distributed through a fair on Aug. 12, and ECC is also seeking volunteers to fill the backpacks, on Aug. 9 and 10, and assist at the fair. Volunteers under 18 years old are welcome to fill the backpacks, but only those over 18 can assist at the fair due to student confidentiality concerns.

Those wishing to donate supplies can purchase any of the following items: two-pocket folders, one-subject-wide ruled notebooks, 10-count packs of yellow wood pencils, black pens, scissors, glue sticks, rulers, 24-count packs of crayons and backpacks. Items such as folders and notebooks should be solid colored, and items like scissors, rulers and backpacks should be in gender-neutral colors.

Donation boxes for Project Backpack are located at:St. Charles Episcopal Church, Illinois Pain Treatment Institute, District U-46, Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce, ECC Student Life Office and Elgin State Bank’s S. Randall Road, Summit Street and N. McLean Boulevard branches.
