Geneva committee reviews "Places for Eating" tax

The city of Geneva Committee of the Whole met Sept. 19 discuss "Places for Eating" tax.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the city:

SPECIAL COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE MINUTES

September 19, 2016

Present: Mayor Burns, Ald. Bruno, Burghart Cummings, Kilburg, Maladra, Marks, Radecki, Seno,

Simonian, Singer.

Absent: None

Also present: Radovich, Dawkins, Babica, Tymoszenko, DeGroot, Antenore, Kruse.

1. CALL TO ORDER

Mayor Burns chaired, calling the meeting to order at 7:46 p.m.

2. ITEMS OF BUSINESS

Consider Draft Ordinance Amending Title 1 (Administrative), Chapter 9 (Municipal Taxes) of the Geneva City Code Pertaining to the Imposition of a “Places for Eating” Tax in the City of Geneva, Illinois

Moved by Ald. Singer, seconded by Ald. Marks.

Ald. Simonian called for placing the tax monies collected in a special fund for unbudgeted expenses such as the purchase of equipment or infrastructure needs. Mayor Burns said allocations of the funds will be addressed as part of the budgeting process. Discussion followed regarding the allocation and usage of funds collected through the places for eating tax.

Ald. Kilburg suggested possibly eliminating SSA #1 in order to assuage possible business-owner resistance to the places for eating tax.

There being no further discussion, roll call: ayes: 9 nays: 1 (Simonian) Motion carried.

3. NEW BUSINESS

Ald. Simonian complimented the Geneva History Museum on its successful BBQ fundraiser.

4. ADJOURNMENT

Moved by Ald. Simonian, seconded by Ald. Singer. V/V: 10-0 Motion carried.

The meeting adjourned at 8:11 p.m.
