Regular Meeting

Tuesday ? 16 August 2016

1. Call to Order

Trustee Sullivan called the regular meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. in the Elizabeth L. Hall Conference

Room of the Batavia Public Library.

Trustees Present: Diane L Blodgett, Andrew R. Deitchman, Richard A. Henders, Cara M. Schuster,

Jo Ann Smith, Douglas S. Sullivan, and J. Thomas Von Lunen

Trustees Absent: None

Staff Members Present: Director George H. Scheetz, H. Joseph McKane, Kathy A. Moecher, Stacey L.

Peterson, and Joanne C. Zillman

Visitors Present: Barbara L. Mabbs, volunteer, Batavia Access Television (BATV) Inc.

4. Comments from the Audience

There were no comments from the audience.

5. Approve the Consent Agenda

Trustee Sullivan read the consent agenda.

Trustee Sullivan asked whether there were any changes to the consent agenda.

Motion by Trustee Blodgett to approve the consent agenda, as presented, to include the following

items:—

6. Approve the Agenda

Motion by Trustee Schuster to approve the agenda, as presented. Seconded by Trustee Blodgett. All: Aye.

The motion carried.

7. Financial Reports: July 2016

? 2016–2017 Investment Report — NO REPORT / FIRST REPORT FOLLOWING 1ST QUARTER

H. Joseph McKane, the Library’s Financial Specialist, asked whether there were any questions regarding

the financial reports, which were included in the Board packet.

In response to a question from Trustee Sullivan, McKane reported that a report on the Working Budget

for 2016–2017 would be available at the September meeting.

8. President’s Report

Fermilab Natural Areas: Trustee Sullivan reported that he attended the Green Fair on the Fox, where he

learned about Fermilab Natural Areas, a not-for-profit organization formed in 2006 to study, restore, and

maintain Fermilab’s unique combination of ecological environments, to inform and enrich local residents’

knowledge of the Fermilab site, and to contribute to the preservation of global biodiversity. Discussion

followed on a possible partnership with Fermilab Natural Areas to bring more programs to the Library.

Stacey L. Peterson, the Library’s Adult Services Manager, noted that the Library presented a program in

2013, “More than Physics: The Ecology of Fermilab,” by Ryan E. Campbell, restoration ecologist, as part

of the New Lyceum Lecture Series.

9. Good News / Comments from the Board

Trustee Blodgett reported that her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Ikuko, will present a program at

the Library on Thursday, 1 September 2016, on “Japan and Its Tea.”

Trustee Schuster noted that some libraries have programs in which retired teachers assist students with

homework and wondered whether this was an option for Batavia now that Live Homework Help was

discontinued.

Trustee Von Lunen reported that Trustee Henders, Trustee Smith, and he attended an “Overview of

SWAN” at the Bloomingdale Public Library.

Director Scheetz distributed a copy of “Overview of SWAN: Presentation to Library Trustees” to the

Board, for the benefit of those Trustees who were not able to attend the presentation and question-andanswer

session mentioned by Trustee Von Lunen, which took place on Wednesday, 3 August 2016.

Discussion followed on the proposed dissolution of LINC and migration to SWAN.

In response to a comment by Trustee Smith, discussion followed on “net borrowers.”

10. Correspondence and Communications

The following items of correspondence and communications were included in the Board packet or

distributed at the meeting.

Total Circulation (Items Checked Out)

The total circulation in July reflected a decrease of 1.3% from July 2015 (62,387 compared to

63,239)—for an average of 2,079.6 items checked out per day over 30 days (the Library was

closed July 4 for Independence Day), or an average of 226.9 items per hour over 275 hours!

Total Number of Unique Visitors to Web Site

The total number of unique visitors to the Web site (www.BataviaPublicLibary.org) in July

reflected an increase of 13.6% over July 2015 (9,591 compared to 8,445), for an average of 309.4

visitors per day over 31 days, or an average of 12.9 visitors per hour over 744 hours (the service is

available 24/7).

Total Number of Page Views to Web Site (Home Page Only)

The total number of page views (home page only) in July reflected a decrease of 11.9% from July

2016 (14,083 compared to 15,992), for an average of 454.3 page views per day over 31 days, or

an average of 18.9 page views per hour over 744 hours (the service is available 24/7).

Total Number of Visits to Library

The total number of visits in July reflected a decrease of 9.1% from July 2015 (25,636 compared

to 28,204)—for an average of 854.5 visits per day over 30 days (the Library was closed on July 4

for Independence Day), or an average of 93.2 visits per hour over 275 hours!

? Other Highlights

New Lyceum Lecture Series: Director Scheetz reported that the next event in the New Lyceum

Lecture Series is “Surviving 9/11,” presented by Ryan Yantis, Lt. Col., U.S. Army (ret.), a

survivor of the attack on the Pentagon, on Tuesday, 6 September 2016.

Illinois Library Association Annual Conference: Director Scheetz reported that the Illinois

Library Association Annual Conference in Rosemont is scheduled for Tuesday–Thursday, 18–20

October 2016.

Consolidated Election: Director Scheetz announced that the Consolidated Election would take

place on Tuesday, 4 April 2017, at which four Trustees will be elected to four-year terms and one

Trustee would be elected to a two-year term.

The Business Office will produce election packets for candidates on or before September 20,

which is the first day that candidates may circulation petitions.

? Report from Youth Services

Joanne C. Zillman presented highlights from her written report and, in particular, reported on the

Summer Reading Club and an exciting new program for Batavia families, “1000 Books Before

Kindergarten.” Discussion followed.

? Report from Adult Services

Stacey L. Peterson presented highlights from her written report and, in particular, reported on the

work of the Adult Reading Round Table and upcoming New Lyceum Lecture Series events.

In addition, Peterson announced that Aimee L. Miller was the new director of the Learning

Resource Center at Batavia High School.

12. Committee and Official Representative Reports

a. Standing Committee on Facilities: There was no meeting in August.

b. Standing Committee on Finance: There was no meeting in August.

c. Standing Committee on Outreach: Trustee Henders presented a brief report on the work of the

Standing Committee on Outreach, the agenda for which was distributed to the Board.

d. Standing Committee on Services: Trustee Sullivan presented a brief report on the work of the

Standing Committee on Services, the agenda for which was distributed to the Board.

e. Batavia Public Library Foundation: Trustee Schuster presented a brief report on the work of the

Batavia Public Library Foundation.

f. Friends of the Batavia Public Library: There was no meeting in July. The next meeting is

scheduled for Thursday, 25 August 2016.

g. Library Integrated Network Consortium (LINC): Director Scheetz presented a brief report on the

work of LINC.

h. Batavia Access Television (BATV): Trustee Schuster presented a brief report on the work of BATV.

13. Future Agenda Items

Director Scheetz noted that an updated list of future agenda items was included in the Board packet.
