Batavia Public Library District Board fills trustee vacancy

At a recent meeting, the Batavia Public Library District Board filled a trustee vacancy on the board.

The Batavia Public Library District Board includes seven residents of the district who are  elected for staggered four-year trustee terms. The board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.

Special Meeting

1. Call to Order

President Sullivan called the special meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth L. Hall Conference Room of the Batavia Public Library.

Trustees Present: Diane L. Blodgett, Andrew R. Deitchman, Richard A. Henders, Cara M. Schuster, Douglas S. Sullivan, and J. Thomas Von Lunen

Trustees Absent: None

Staff Members Present: Director George H. Scheetz, Kathy A. Moecher, and Joanne C. Zillman

Visitors Present: Garrett S. Boersma; Amy L. Vidlak Girmscheid; David A. Hrycewicz; Jo Ann Smith; and Miriam A. Zeddies

4. Comments from the Audience

There were no comments from the audience.

Trustee Sullivan noted that President Jimmy Carter, early in his political career, once served on his local library board, observing with a smile, “Who knows where this position will lead?!”

5. Interview Candidates for Public Office

A closed session for “The selection of a person to fill a public office, …, or the discipline, performance, or removal of the occupant of a public office,” as authorized by 5 ILCS 120/29(c)(3)

Motion by Trustee Henders to enter closed session for the purpose stated. Seconded by Trustee Von Lunen. Roll Call: Blodgett, aye; Deitchman, aye; Henders, aye; Schuster, aye; Sullivan, aye; Von Lunen,

aye. The motion carried, 6–0.

The Board entered closed session at 6:34 p.m.

The Board returned to open session at 9:23 p.m.

6. Appointment of a Person to Fill a Public Office

Trustee Sullivan stated that the Board of Library Trustees conducted interviews with eight highly qualified candidates for the office of Library Trustee. He announced that, after due deliberation, the consensus of the Board was to appoint Jo Ann Smith to fill the open position.

Motion by Trustee Blodgett to appoint Jo Ann Smith to fill the open position of Library Trustee.

Seconded by Trustee Von Lunen. Roll Call: Blodgett, aye; Deitchman, aye; Henders, aye; Schuster, aye;

Sullivan, aye; Von Lunen, aye. The motion carried, 6–0.

Director Scheetz reported that the term of office would expire in May 2017, and that the incumbent is eligible to run for a full term of office at the Consolidated Election in April 2017.

In response to a question from Trustee Von Lunen, discussion followed on notifying the candidates of the Board’s decision.

The consensus of the Board was that Director Scheetz would contact each candidate by telephone and each candidate would receive a letter from President Sullivan.

Trustee Von Lunen requested (and the other Trustees concurred) that language in the letter should encourage the unsuccessful candidates to run for office in 2017.

7. Qualify Newly Appointed Trustees

The newly appointed Trustee was absent and will be contacted regarding the Official Oath.
