A proposed bill in Illinois could significantly reduce prison sentences, potentially allowing individuals convicted of severe crimes to be released after serving only half their terms. House Bill 5219, sponsored by state Rep. Barbara Hernandez and co-sponsored by Kevin John Olickal and Lilian Jimenez, would apply retroactively, affecting those already incarcerated. Currently, certain crimes require inmates to serve between 50% and 85% of their sentences.
