Randy Shilts: Born August 8, 1951 in Aurora, Illinois

Randy Shilts was born on August 8, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa, and grew up in Aurora, Illinois. He studied journalism at the University of Oregon and became a prominent journalist and author. Shilts was the first openly gay reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle in the 1980s. His works include The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, a biography of Harvey Milk, and And the Band Played On, which detailed the AIDS epidemic. Shilts’s reporting and writing focused on LGBT issues, gay rights, and AIDS. He received several awards for his work, including the 1988 Outstanding Author award. Shilts died of AIDS-related complications on February 17, 1994. His early life in Aurora played a role in shaping his career and advocacy.
