The Illinois Supreme Court has declined House Republicans' attempt to file a lawsuit against the Democratic majority for alleged gerrymandering of legislative maps. The decision was reached with a 5-1-0 vote. Justice Overstreet dissented, and Justice Holder White recused herself from the case.

Following this ruling, State Representative Dan Ugaste, a Republican from Geneva, expressed his discontent. He stated, "Never has a greater injustice been foisted on voters of Illinois through a judicial decision than was done today. This has to be the absolute worst. The court had a chance to make things right and to give the voters a chance to pick their representatives instead of representatives picking their voters. They declined because of a technical term in the law called laches, which I believe was completely misapplied." He praised Justice Overstreet's dissent, saying it effectively highlighted the decision's issues. Ugaste emphasized that timeliness should be contested by the defense, not by the court.
