City of Geneva Natural Resources Committee met April 3

Here is the agenda provided by the committee:

1. Call to Order

5. Active Projects:

• Earth Day Event

i. Adam Dagley will discuss the event and final coordination.

ii. 11 to 1pm at Peck Farm on April 20, 2024.

iii. Kelvin has trees

iv. Jay has trees and rain barrels. Bring Square swipe for credit cards.

v. Tomatoes are being grown

vi. Participation letter and poster has been sent

vii. Post it on social media

• Eastside Fire Station Natural Landscaping Project

i. Dan Ludwig continues to monitor the plants.

• River Clean-up Day

i. Watch the water flow by and be ready for 2024.

• Rain Barrels for sale

i. Jay ordered 8 barrels. Barrels are $75 each.

• Greening Geneva Initiative

i. Held a tree meeting with WCT Team to discuss 2024 tree planting locations.

ii. Will work with Wasco to get a cost for trees identified.

• Wine, Cheese, and Trees

i. WCT 2024 was a huge success!

a. Total revenue $69.579.99

b. Expenses $15,950.96

c. Net: $53,629.13

d. $37,540.39 into communal tree fund

e. $5,362.91 - NRC and GLF

f. $5,362.92 – GPDF

ii. Library has reserved all rooms for the 2025 event.

• Gunnar Anderson Stewardship

i. Workdays have been moved to Gunnar Anderson.

ii. Battle of the Brush Piles was March 16th

. Had about 100 students from 5 schools.

iii. Wheaton Warrenville South took the trophy home.

• Elm Park Restoration Work

i. Update from Kelvin

• NRC Facebook page and Instagram

i. Updates from Mel and Kelvin.

• Recycling Bins on 3rd Street

i. The bins are in place and being utilized.

ii. It has been noted that many of the recycle bins are overrun with material and need to be emptied sooner so that they are not overwhelmed with garbage as well.

• Pumpkin Recycling

i. Will hold a second Smash.

• NRC Lecture Series

i. The next lecture will be Designing with Native Plants for the Home and Garden in March, 2024.

ii. A calendar of ideas was created by Rachel.

• Dark Sky Initiative

i. NRC to continue to promote the Dark Sky Initiative.

ii. Bill is working on a Proclamation with the City. Will be on May City Council agenda.

• Tree Ordinance

i. Based on NRC recommendations, there are several sections of the City Code that need to be amended in relation to tree preservation, tree protection, and landscaping.

6. New Initiatives

• Create an education piece to reduce plastic and styrofoam at restaurants.

• Continue to support educational opportunity to move Spring leaf collection into May, not April.
