City of Geneva Natural Resources Committee met June 7.

Here is the agenda provided by the committee:

5. Active Projects:

• Earth Day Event

i. Keep the light on for 2024.

• Eastside Fire Station Natural Landscaping Project

i. Dan Ludwig continues to monitor the plants.

• River Clean-up Day

i. Stay tuned for 2023.

• Rain Barrels for sale

i. Jay has barrels.

ii. Barrels are $75 each.

• Greening Geneva Initiative

i. The library will replant two trees using the communal WCT funds held by GPD.

ii. Wasco planted 6 trees at the Kane Cty Courthouse and 12 trees at the Kane Cty Government Center. The County will put gator bags on each tree and keep them watered.

iii. 50 trees were planted thru the Park District using WCT funds.

iv. Do we hire Wasco to water the trees in the tree grates? PW does not have a seasonal staff person to do any watering at this point.

• Wine, Cheese, and Trees

i. WCT 2024…

ii. Library has already reserved all rooms for the next event.

• Fabyan Preserve Stewardship

i. Workdays will end soon for the summer season.

• Elm Park Restoration Work

i. Update from Kelvin

• NRC Facebook page and Instagram

i. Update of meeting with City

• Recycling Bins on 3rd Street

i. The bins are in place and being utilized.

• Pumpkin Recycling

i. Work with GPD to create an informational flyer, place to drop pumpkins, etc.

• Dark Sky Initiative

i. NRC to continue to promote the Dark Sky Initiative.

• Tree Ordinance

i. Based on NRC recommendations, there are several sections of the City Code that need to be amended in relation to tree preservation, tree protection, and landscaping.

6. New Initiatives

• Create an education piece to reduce plastic and styrofoam at restaurants. Attend Cantigny seminar?

• Continue to support educational opportunity to move Spring leaf collection into May, not April.
