Illinois State Rep. Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) is calling attention to the proposed SAFE-T Act which aims to abolish the state's cash bail system.
In a May 23 Facebook post, Keicher shared a link to a Shaw Local report on the concerns of state's attorneys from Kane, Kendall and DuPage counties about the SAFE-T Act, and its effects on the community. The state's attorneys spoke in a May 19 forum at the Eola Community Center in Aurora.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the bill last year and under the legislation, the state's cash bail system will be eliminated on Jan. 1, 2023.
"State’s Attorneys are voicing concerns about more violent criminals roaming free in Illinois due to provisions in the Democrats' SAFE-T Act," Keicher wrote in his Facebook post.
According to Injustice Watch, the law has been a target of Republican legislators and many others since it was passed and signed into law. The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) outlined the law's biggest elements as these: new standards for use of force; elimination of the cash bail system; creation of a statewide decertification process for officers found to have used excessive force, among others.
Since the law passed, law enforcement groups have been meeting with legislators and trying to get the law changed, according to Injustice Watch.
