Spartans come out victorious in tight non-conference game

The Aurora University women's lacrosse team hosted the Eagles of University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup. The Spartans improve to 10-5 on the season after defeating the Eagles 12-11 in a closely played contest.

The Basics

RECORDS: Aurora University 10-5 overall and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 6-5 overall

How it Happened

- The first quarter was back and forth scoring affair with teams trading leads throughout.

- After trailing 1-0 12:50 into the contest, Spartan Margaret Flanagan scored less than three minutes later to tie the game 1-1.

- The Eagles responded with a goal to take a 2-1 lead with 8:13 left in the first quarter.

- Monique Gibson scored her first of the night to tie the game 2-2.

- Less than two minutes later, UW La-Crosse took a 3-2 lead.

- With 34 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Monique Gibson and Danielle Cobbett scored back to back goals to push the Spartans back in front 4-2.

- After the Eagles opened the scoring in the second quarter, AU answered with three goals of their own to give the Spartans a 7-4 lead. Goals coming from Monique Gibson, Danielle Cobbett, and Margaret Flanagan.

- The Eagles answered back with two goals to cut their deficit to within one, 7-6 AU.

-  Margaret Flanagan and Danielle Cobbett would both score their third of the night to give the Spartans a 9-6 lead going into halftime.

- UW La-Crosse scored two goals midway through the third quarter.

- Leading by one, Spartan Danielle Cobbett scored and was quickly followed by Bailey Simpson her first of the day. Simpson was assisted by Monique Gibson.

- Monique Gibson extended the Spartans lead 12-8 to start the fourth quarter.

- The Eagles scored three goals late in the fourth to make it a one goal game.

- With 2:05 left in the half, Spartan goalie Alexis Crowley stopped the final shots on net and the Spartans were victorious 12-11.
