State Rep. Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) is demanding that the governor veto a newly-drawn district map bill that passed the Illinois House of Representatives late last month.

The Daily Chronicle reported that the state House approved the newly drawn maps 73-43 along party lines, a move Keicher and his fellow Republicans have heavily criticized.

"Politicians should not be drawing maps. Period," Keicher said in a statement. "I join those urging Governor Pritzker to stand by his campaign promise and veto this bill.”

Keicher has the backing of Illinois Republicans.

"State Representative @JeffKeicher has called for @GovPritzker to veto the ‘new maps’ gerrymandered by the Democrats,” the Kane County GOP shared on Twitter. We couldn’t agree more.”

The Illinois GOP was not alone in its frustration with the maps.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, a Latino civil rights organization, pursued legal action earlier this year on grounds the maps were based on data from the  American Community Survey and not the 2020 census, the Daily Chronicle reported.

That new legislative district maps – if signed by the governor – will be used in elections for the next ten years.
