State Sen. Don DeWitte (R-33rd) congratulated Chicago for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day despite the pandemic.
DeWitte posted a photo of the Chicago River with the water colored green. Plumbers Local 130 upheld the longtime Chicago tradition this year of dyeing the water green for St. Patrick’s Day.
DeWitte commended the city of Chicago for keeping up with tradition and keeping a tight lid on the whole event. He wrote on his Facebook page, “I'm impressed the City was able to keep a lid on this fantastic St. Patrick's Day weekend surprise!”
According to ABC News, Mayor Lori Lightfoot kept plans for the dye job secret because she didn’t want people risking a COVID-19 spread by crowding the river banks.
Lightfoot had canceled the St. Patrick’s Day parade which was supposed to happen last Saturday. Last year, the parade was also cancelled due to the pandemic.
Despite the lack of crowds and absence of a parade, DeWitte still had something good to say about this year’s St. Patrick’s Day event. He thanked Plumbers Local 130 and reminded Chicagoans that despite the grim situation it’s only a matter of time before things go back to normal.
