Republican state House hopeful Laura Curtis has a direct and simple question for voters in her 49th District.
“I want them to tell me if they’re happy with the way things are in Illinois: all the high taxes, high corruption and little reform,” Curtis told the Kane County Reporter. “My campaign is about saying no to the proposed progressive tax and ending corruption in Springfield.”
Running against Democrat Maria Hirschauer, Curtis plans to put that question and more to voters when she engages them during so-called a Day of Action planned for the district on Sept.19. As part of the festivities, she and a group of other GOP candidates running in Kane County plan to knock on doors and deliver literature attesting to their rebuild Illinois efforts.
“The Democrats have had both Houses and the governor’s office for two years and we’re asking voters to ask themselves if in that time things have gotten any better for them,” Curtis added. “I don’t think you can find many people that will answer yes. If anything, things have gotten worse.”
As for Hirschaeur, Curtis said a vote for her is a vote for things to stay just as they have been.
“My opponent has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Democratic Party and House Speaker Mike Madigan and has been able to outspend me by a better than 10-to-1 margin,” she said. “That doesn’t happen for free. That means she will be under the control of Speaker Madigan. She’s taken money from him and a lot of other people and places.”
Curtis added there’s been no shortage of dollars flowing into her race for the benefit of her rival, with much of it coming from Democrats.
“They just won this seat in 2018 and I think they really want to hold onto to it,” she said.
