City of Geneva issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.
The City of Geneva's Natural Resources Committee is working with Tree Climbing Japan to bring people of all ages and physical abilities into forests to climb trees and enjoy nature.
The committee is helping sponsor a presentation from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. People attending the free event will learn more about TreeHab and Tree Therapy, roots of organization started by Dr. John Gathright in Japan almost 20 years ago.
Tree Climbing Japan is active in improving forests and empowering people world-wide by helping more than 250,000 people climb trees and training instructors. Through this work, Dr. Gathright later established TreeHab (Tree Climbing Therapy and Tree-Assisted Therapy programs) that enables people of all abilities to climb the world's largest trees.
In 2001, Hikosaka Toshiko became the first severely physically-challenged person to climb atop an 80-meter giant Sequoia tree, the fourth tallest tree in the world. Tree-Assisted Therapy continues to help physically-challenged individuals climb trees and also strives to create international exchanges through tree climbing
Geneva's Natural Resources Committee Chairman Jay Womack is working closely with Dr. Gathright to bring Tree Climbing Japan to Geneva and someday throughout the country.
Due to generous support provided by the Arcada Theatre, CLARK and grants awarded to Geneva's Natural Resources Committee, the seminar will be free of charge and everyone is encouraged to attend.
