Republican state House candidate Dan Ugaste sees a common thread connecting the voters of his district that reaffirms his decision to run for office.

“Everybody I talk to the first thing they say to me is that the taxes are too high and the services aren’t good enough,” Ugaste told the Kane County Reporter. “It’s also not lost on them that lawmakers in Springfield never seem to get around to doing any of the things they claim all the money they take from them is supposed to be intended for.”

Ugaste, running against Democrat Richard Johnson to replace retiring Rep. Steven Andersson (R-Geneva) in Illinois’ 65th District, insists his campaign is all about changing that dynamic.

“We really don’t have a choice if we’re ever going to get Illinois back in order,” he said. “The time has come for us to get our house in order and stop taxing people out of this state.”

Ugaste said the exodus of people heading for the border in search of a better life for themselves isn’t restricted to just young people.

“I recently spoke with a 77-year-old woman who’s lived her whole life here in Illinois and now she wants out,” he said. “Things have gotten to the point where she feels she can’t afford to be here any longer. There’s something wrong with that picture, and lawmakers in Springfield need to be doing everything they can to change things.”

Ugaste said many of those who remain in Illinois are just as frustrated as those who’ve made the decision to flee.

“Taxes are so high and out of control that people don’t even want to talk about things like the progressive or graduated tax now being proposed by Democrats because they’ve just had enough,” he said. “It’s like they're hoping if they don’t talk about it then maybe they won’t really have to deal with it and it will just go away.”
