Batavia FD responds to 68 fires in 2017

Batavia Fire Department responded to 494 calls in 2017 - 69.2 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Batavia included 68 fires - 39 structure fires, five vehicle fires and 24 other fires. The fire department also responded to seven calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,442,300 in fire loss - or about $21,210 per fire.

The department also received 419 false calls, including seven malicious calls and 412 other false calls.

The Batavia Fire Department had an annual budget of $282,038 in 2017.

The Batavia Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 20 active employees and 18 retired or inactive employees, was $156,786 positive as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $4,355 for every fire in 2016.
