Rep. Steven Andersson (R-Geneva) has resigned as the Republican House floor leader following his votes in favor of the state’s new budget, according to CapitolFax.com.
Andersson was one of 15 House Republicans to initially vote in favor of the budget plan and one of 10 to vote to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto, according to the Chicago Tribune. CapitolFax.com cited a memo from House Minority Leader Jim Durkin asking Andersson to give up the position.
“Following the conclusion of the spring and early summer legislative session, I decided that it would be in the best interest of the Republican Caucus to go in a new direction with the position of our Floor Leader,” the memo read, according to CapitolFax.com. “This afternoon, I asked Representative Andersson to step down from the position. He agreed, stating he also believed it would be in the best interest of the caucus.”

CapitolFax.com also noted that Andersson worked to get other House Republicans to vote in favor of both the budget package and the veto override. Durkin said in his memo that he hopes to announce the new floor leader soon.
