Residents of Geneva are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Pumpkin Smash event, scheduled for Saturday, November 8. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Gardens at Prairie Green, located at the intersection of Peck and Bricher roads.
The Pumpkin Smash is organized by the City’s Natural Resources Committee in partnership with the Geneva Park District. The initiative aims to reduce waste by keeping pumpkins out of landfills. According to organizers, park district staff will incorporate the collected pumpkins into the garden plots as a soil amendment.
Attendees are asked to remove all decorations from their pumpkins before recycling them. This includes candles, yarn hair, stickers, googly eyes, and plastic accessories.
Food and hot drinks will be available for purchase from local vendors during the event.
The Community Gardens at Prairie Green represents a collaboration among the Geneva Park District, the City of Geneva, and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. The gardens feature 131 rental plots and offer gardening classes for residents. Garden plots measure 20 by 30 feet and are open daily from dawn until dusk between April and October.
Returning gardeners from 2025 can renew their plot rentals beginning December 1. New gardeners may register for any remaining plots starting February 1, 2026. Additional information about plot registration is provided on the Park District’s website.
For more details about the Natural Resources Committee, residents are directed to visit the City’s website.
