State Senator Don DeWitte is organizing an event in partnership with the Illinois Treasurer’s Office to help residents of the 33rd Senate District locate and claim unclaimed property and cash. The event will take place on Tuesday, August 19, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Gail Borden Public Library’s South Elgin Branch, located at 127 S. McLean Blvd in South Elgin.
During the event, counselors from the Treasurer’s Office will be available to assist attendees in searching for unclaimed items and filing claims if necessary. According to DeWitte, “We have had tremendous success in helping people find cash and property they didn’t even know they were owed. In fact, over the last few years we have returned tens of thousands of dollars to constituents from the 33rd District.”
The state currently holds more than $5 billion in unclaimed property and cash. DeWitte encourages residents to check if any of these assets belong to them. “Right now, the state could be holding inheritance money or funds from a forgotten bank account that belongs to you,” said DeWitte. “Don’t let it remain unclaimed. Stop by to see if you are owed money and take ownership of what belongs to you.”
DeWitte has represented Illinois’ 33rd Senate District since his election in 2018, succeeding Karen McConnaughay as senator.
