Aurora, Illinois, which became a significant part of his life and career. He began playing piano at six and trumpet at eight. By 1975, he was marching with the Fox Valley Raiders, initially playing mellophone and later switching to first soprano bugle. In 1978, he joined the snare line. His early experiences in Aurora's music scene set the stage for his future career.

In 1979, Olson joined the band Trouble, becoming their original drummer. Trouble became a pioneering doom metal band, with Olson contributing to their early success. During breaks from Trouble, he pursued further education, earning a degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music in 1992. He also composed for the Borealis Theater Company in Chicago.

Olson's connection to Aurora deepened when he taught at Waubonsee Community College in 1996. There, he created the "electronic music ensemble" course and influenced many students. He also composed for the Paula Fraz Dance Company, receiving a Ruth Page Award for his work.

In 2006, Olson formed Retro Grave, a project that allowed him to explore different musical styles. He played with other bands, including The Skull and In-Graved, and founded Upland Recording in 2001, releasing various albums. In 2010, he launched the radio show Heady Metal with Jeff Olson.
