The Montgomery Police Department has announced the promotion of Officer Chris Johnson to the rank of Sergeant, effective June 30, 2025. This advancement is attributed to Johnson's dedication and leadership in serving the Montgomery community.

Johnson has been with the department for 18 years, during which he has taken on various roles such as field training officer, detective, firearms instructor, and certified drone operator. He is part of the Kane County Honor Guard and the drone program. Earlier this year, he served as a class supervisor at the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage, where he trained new law enforcement recruits. Additionally, Johnson serves in the United States Navy Reserves as a Petty Officer First Class.

His interest in law enforcement was sparked by an athletic dean while playing soccer at Waubonsee Community College. Initially considering a career as a firefighter or paramedic, he was encouraged to explore criminal justice and found it suited him well. He later transferred to Western Illinois University, earning a degree in law enforcement and justice administration with a minor in sociology.

Throughout his career, Johnson has distinguished himself through patrol work, community policing, and special assignments. His efforts have earned him respect from both peers and community members.

"Sergeant Johnson has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the Montgomery Police Department," said Chief of Police Phil Smith. "His leadership qualities, experience, and dedication to the safety and well-being of our residents make him an excellent fit for this new role."

In his new role as Sergeant, Johnson will oversee one of the Village's two overnight shifts. He will mentor officers and lead daily operations to maintain high standards in service delivery. This promotion is part of ongoing efforts by the department to recognize talent within its ranks.

A formal swearing-in ceremony took place at the Montgomery Police Department on June 30, 2025. Family members and colleagues attended to celebrate this milestone.
