The Batavia Police Department, in collaboration with Kane County Emergency Management, is organizing a free emergency and disaster preparedness class aimed at children. This educational initiative, titled "Preparedness, Police & Popsicles," is designed for kids entering grades 3 to 5. The event will take place on Wednesday, July 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Batavia City Hall.
The camp aims to educate children on differentiating between emergencies, disasters, and hazards while equipping them with the confidence to respond effectively. The curriculum covers essential topics such as basic first aid, how to call 911, building a Go Bag, weather safety protocols, gun safety measures, and family communication plans. The organizers have structured the course content to be age-appropriate and engaging.
In addition to learning valuable skills, participants will receive a Go Bag to take home and enjoy popsicles during the event. They will also have lunch with officers from the Batavia Police Department and comfort dog River. A tour of emergency vehicles is included in the day's activities.
Children attending should bring their own lunch and water bottle. As space is limited for this event, interested parties are encouraged to register by visiting bataviail.gov/kidscamp.
